Q: Can sitting for long periods increase the risk of heart problems?
A: Yes, prolonged sitting is strongly linked to a higher risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases. Even people who exercise regularly can be affected if they spend most of their day sitting. Long periods of physical inactivity can slow blood circulation, increase blood pressure, and raise levels of harmful cholesterol. Over time, these changes strain the heart and blood vessels, leading to greater risk of heart conditions. To reduce the risk, it’s important to take breaks, stand up, stretch, or move around every hour, especially during long workdays or travel. Small movements can make a big difference.
